Today in Chemistry when we walked in Mrs. Friedmann checked in our hw from last night.
 We then went over the hw and Mrs. Friedmann answered some questions.

Next we took some notes on Titration:
 I know the concentration of a base.
What is the concentration of a certain acid?
#H's x Ma x Va = Mb x Vb x #OH's

HCl and NaOH
 # H's= 1        #OH's= 1

 H2SO4 and NaOH
 # H's= 2        #OH's= 1

H3PO4 and Ca(OH)2
 # H's= 1        #OH's= 1

neutralization:
HCl + NaOH ---> NaCl + H2O

We then observed Mrs. Friedmann conduct a brief Titration Lab.

HW:
1) Lab is due tomorrow
2) Start studying for test on Friday!

Monday, April 28th

Today, we turned in our take home quiz and there were 4 handouts about the labs today.

Then we got in to quick notes for the Lab

Indicators Lab

- An indicator turns one color at one pH is a different color at a different pH.
- Most indicators are weak acids. (HIn - means indicator)
A couple are weak bases

HIn (Color 1 weak acid) <-------> H+ + In- (Color 2 weak base conjugate)

- The indicator responds to changes in the [hydronium ion].

HIn <-----> H+ In-

                   <-------------------- Add base, shift to left (color 1)

Add acid, shifts to the right     ---------------->

These were the basic notes, the more notes for the actual lab are also posted in Moodle... According to Mrs. Friedmann

After some quick notes, we did lab to find the pH of 15 solutions experimentally.

For HW:
Hand in : Table of experimental data
                  Calculations of pH for 15 solutions (It is not Due Tommorow)
                  Webassigns on buffers, due tonight

Class Blog for Friday, April 25 :)

A note for: Melissa Frankie EJ and Kate

What we did in class today:
- Mrs. Friedmann put us in small groups and gave us a similar problem to the quiz yesterday. We worked through it and are beginning to understand the concepts of determining the pH of a salt solution. Be ready to perform similar operations to that of the quiz from yesterday, since the quiz didn't count for a grade. This is a learning process:)
- After that, we went over the quiz.

Homework: There is a worksheet, and a webassign on buffers

Enjoy your weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Class Blog 4-22-14

Hey Honors Chemistry! (Pulling a Mrs. Friedmann) So sorry this is late. I really have no excuse, I just totally forgot.

What We Did
  • Checked in homework from last night
  • Went over pages 8 and 9 (Our homework from last night)
  • Had a lesson on finding the pH of salts.
    • The lesson is recorded and should be posted on moodle
  • We didn’t get to buffers, so that will be taught on friday

Homework
  • 2 webassigns due Wednesday at midnight
  • Pages 10 and 11 in the Acids and Bases Packet
  • Study for quiz on Thursday.
    • We will have VERY short periods on Thursday, so it will be a short quiz.

Who doesn't like a good joke?
1. Girl, you’re a 10.

On the pH scale, because you’re BASIC!

Blog 4-21-14

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a great 3 day weekend.

-We started today by checking in pages 6-7 in the packet.
-We then grabbed a packet of pages 9-11 that should be stapled to the current packet.  (moodle here -->Part 2)

Reminders
-Nothing in this unit is new, it is review just in the form of acids and bases

Review
pH= -log[H+]
pOH= -log [OH-]
pH+pOH=14
[H+]=10^-pH
[OH-]= 10^-pH

pH<7 = Acidic
pH=7 = Neutral
pH>7 = Basic

Strong Acids: HCl, HBr, HI, HNO3, H2SO4, HClO4
Strong Bases: NaOH, LiOH, KOH, Ca(OH)2, Sr(OH)2, Ba(OH)2

Notes
-Percent Dissociation
     -What percent of the original chemical undergoes dissociation?
     -Change (or X found in equation) divided by the original concentration.

-Conjugate Bases and Acids (VERY IMPORTANT)
     • The conjugate base of a weak acid tends to form basic solutions in water.
     • The conjugate acid of a weak base tends to form acidic solutions in water.
     • The conjugate base of a strong acid has neither acidic or basic properties.
     • The conjugate acid of a strong base has neither acidic or basic properties.

Homework
-Finish Pages 8-9 of the packet
-Try #34 on page 9 for possible extra credit
-2 webassigns due wednesday night

4-16-14

4-16-14

Today, we started class by going over the quiz.

Heads up! There will be a quiz on an ICE problem tomorrow. Be ready for anything, I suggest. There is also a web assign due tonight as per norm.

After that, we went over the homework.

Two important notes:

-In these ICE problems, the concentrations of H3O+ and OH- are very important!
-Small zero rule is always a good choice! (btw. In the small zero rule, you take out the x that is either being added or subtracted)

We went over 9a and 10a.
9a. Concentration of H3O+ should be .000035
10a. Concentration of OH- should be .003

Mrs. Friedmann will post up the key on Moodle.

On that note.
GOOD JOB HONORS ENGLISH STUDENTS! WE MADE IT!

4/10/14

Hello fellow chemists,

Today we were assessed on our knowledge regarding Lechatlier's principle, and Ksp problems. The quiz took about 25 minutes to complete, and after the assessment we began a lab. The data will be posted tomorrow.

Thank you, and stay classy,

EJ Reynolds

The next blogger will be announced tomorrow during class.

The link to the video going over stuff for tomorrow's quiz on Le Chatelier and Ksp is now posted, check it out, especially if you were absent today (I'm talking to you, field trippers!)  It's at the bottom of the Unit 9 box on Moodle, for your viewing pleasure.  Popcorn optional.  :)

4/09/2014

CLASS BLOG:

We were given two handouts: ACID/BASE PROPERTIES LAB

We were going over two example problems
- Video on this is going to be posted (5:00 pm or later) to help you prepare for the QUIZ TOMORROW!

Notes (just in case the video fails):

  • LeChatelier's Principle
  • Ksp
    • Calculate [  ] at equilibrium
    • Calculate Ksp (using solubility)
    • Calculate S (solubility)
      • have to be given Ksp
      • Need number of ions and memorize algorithms
  • Ksp - Common Ion Problems
  • Solubility and Ksp Problems
    • Ex 1: Which of the following has the lowest solubility?
    • a.) AgC2H3O2  Ksp= = 1.9 x 10 ^-3
    • b.) AgCl  Ksp = 1.8 x 10 ^ -10
    • c.) BaCrO4  Ksp = 1.2 x 10^ -10 (Ksp smaller, so lowest solubility)
2 ions : AgC2H3O2 (s) -------> Ag+ (aq) + C2H3O2 - (aq)

....so on for the next two dissociations...

all have two ions!

    • Ex 2: Which of the following has the lowest solubility?
    • a.) MgCO3  Ksp = 6.8 x 10 ^-6
    • b.) PbCl2  Ksp = 1.7 x 10^-5
    • c.) Al(OH)3  Ksp = 2.0 x 10^-31 (SMALLEST Ksp)
write out the dissociations....

1st (a.) one has two ions, so take the square root of Ksp.

2nd (b.) one has 3 ions! Take the cube root of that Ksp/4.

3rd (c.) one has 4 ions! Take fourth root of Ksp/27.

  • Common Ion Problem
    • What is the solubility of PbCl2 in 0.100M MgCl2? The Ksp of PbCl2 = 1.7 x 10^-5
    • Dissociation equation: MgCl2 ----> Mg 2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq)
    • MgCl2 = 0.100M. and Mg= 0.100M.  and Cl= 0.200M.
    • PbCl2 <-----> Pb2+ (aq) + 2 Cl- (aq)
    •              I         0                   0.2
    •              C       +x                  +2x
    •              E        (x)             (0.200+2x)
  • Use ice for PbCl2
  • 1.7x10^-5 = (x)(0.200+2x)^2 , Get rid of the small x; (2x)
  • 1.7x10^-5 = (x)(0.200)^2
  • 1.7x10^-5 = 0.04x
  • x = solubility = 4.25 x 10^-4

Class blog 4/8/2014

Today we got a sheet about the 2014 GBS science contest. If you are interested in this I would talk to Mrs. Friedmann.

QUIZ ON THURSDAY!

The quiz will be covering:

  • Le Chatelier's Principle
  • Ksp
  • Ksp - common ion problems

We went over the solubility product constant packet as well.
-------------------------------------------------------------
We then learned how to do common ion problems:

Solubility in water vs. solubility in another solution
--------------------------------------------
ex: BaSO4 <==> Ba (aq) + SO4 (aq)
                            0 M         0.10 M
                            +x            +x
                            (x)            (0.10 + x)

Ksp BaSO4 = 1.1 * 10^-10

What is its solubnility in 0.10 M Na2SO4 solution?
Na2SO4 ==> 2Na   + SO4
0.10 M           0.20M   0.10M

1.1*10^-10 = (x)*(0.10+x)
1.1*10^-10 = 0.10x + x^2
1.1*10^-10 = x(0.10x)                                (small x rule)
x = 1.1 * 10^-9
