What we did in class today September 18:
- We picked up 4 new pages at the beginning of class (Honors Chem -Review Groups/ Periods, Metal/Nonmetal/Metalloid, atomic structure,Ions,Isotopes), Honors Chem, Honors Chemistry Binary Ionic compounds: Name to Formula Using Crisscrossing, Honors Chemistry Polyatomic Ionic Compounds: Name to Formula Using Crisscrossing)
- We went over answers to ChemThink the atomic structure worksheet.
- We also went over "Holy Atom, Batman"
- We completed the Honors Chem - Review worksheet Groups/Periods, Metals/Nonmetals/Metalloid, Atomic Structure,Ions,Isotopes
- We also started to take notes but we did not finish them
Answers to the Hnrs. Chem -Review:
1.) Mg Magnesium 8.)Ion
2.) K Potassium 9.) Neutron
3.) Ne Neon 10.)Isotopes
4.) 17 neutrons 11.) NO I don't conduct electricity
5.) Electron 12.) 3 protons
6.) Silicon 13.) 10.79 amu which is Boron
7.) 18 electrons
THE ANSWERS TO HOLY ATOM BATMAN AND CHEMTHINK- ATOMIC STRUCTURE ARE IN MOODLE!
TODAYS HW:
NONE !!! :)
But CONTINUE to work on the 4 webassigns even though it seems that webassign is still having problems!
NOTES ON FORMING IONIC COMPOUNDS:
MATTER
MIXTURES PURE SUBSTANCES
ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS
Ionic Molecular aka Covalent
Made of Ions (elements that have charge)
(+ and - stick together)
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF IONS: BINARY AND POLYATOMIC
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF IONS: BINARY AND POLYATOMIC
Cation: + ion, goes first (usually a metal)(NH with subscript of 4 is the exception) And usually have metals but sometimes not
"Cat Ion"
Anion: - Ion, goes second ( Always non- metal)
"Ant Ion"
Binary Ionic Compound: One atom +, one atom -
EXAMPLE: NaCl
K (subscript 2) O
Al (subscript 2) S (subscript 3)
SO HERE'S THE BIG QUESTION- How do you know what numbers go in the formulas?
-Charges Cancel Out!!!!
EX: K( +1) and F (-1) Formula KF
Polyatomic- Groups of atoms that can have charge too!
CHARGES NEED TO BALANCE OUT WITH THESE TOO!!!
EX: POTASSIUM AND NITRATE ION
K+ NO(subscript 3) -1
*ONE OF EACH WILL CANCEL THE CHARGES*
MG+2 NO(subscript 3) -1 -----> Mg(NOsubscript 3) subscript2
Al+3 OH-1 --------->Al(OH)subscript
EX: POTASSIUM AND NITRATE ION
K+ NO(subscript 3) -1
*ONE OF EACH WILL CANCEL THE CHARGES*
- KNO(subscript 3) ( Treat Each "CLUMP" like one thing
More Examples
NA+ SO(subscript 4) -2 -------> NaSO(subscript 4)MG+2 NO(subscript 3) -1 -----> Mg(NOsubscript 3) subscript2
Al+3 OH-1 --------->Al(OH)subscript
Above is the Crisscrossing method for Binary Ionic compounds (IT'S THE SHORT-CUT)
WHAT WE DID IN CLASS TODAY 9/19/13:
- We picked up 3 different worksheets- Naming Compounds, -part 2 wksh, Naming and Formulas of Ionic Compounds
- We finished the notes
- We finished the Honors Chem: Forming Ionic Compounds
- We did the Honors Chem: Binary Ionic Compounds: Name to Formula Using Crisscrossing, we also did the Honors Chem Polyatomic Ionic Compounds: Name to Formula Using Crisscrossing
- Finish all the webassigns due at 11:59 pm today
- Make sure you COMPLETE the Honors Chem Forming Ionic Compounds wksh
- USE YOUR TEXTBOOK, and try doing the Naming Compounds and part 2 wkshs for tomorrow. (Just try your best on those)
The next scribe will be Dorothy Wasilewski :)
